Plastic Pallets for Sale: Rackable vs Nestable vs Stackable [2026 Buyer's Guide]

The buying decision in one page: which plastic pallet type fits your handling, what the three load ratings really mean, what new and used cost, and the four lines that make quotes comparable.

TL;DR: Choose the pallet by how it is handled, not by price. Nestable pallets are for one-way shipping and tight empty storage, stackable for closed-loop floor storage, rackable for beam racking. A rackable pallet's racking load is a fraction of its static load — 30,000 lb static and 2,800 lb racking can be the same pallet.

    Quick Facts

    Dynamic load2,000-5,000 lb
    Racking load (unsupported)1,500-3,000 lb

The Three Types, and When Each Is Right

Nestable. Empty pallets nest inside each other, cutting return-freight and storage cube by up to 70%. Light, lowest cost, lowest capacity. Right for one-way outbound shipments and operations short on empty-pallet storage. Not for beam racking.

Stackable. Full perimeter or closed deck bottom so loaded units stack squarely on the floor and in trailers. The general-purpose choice for closed loops and plant-internal handling.

Rackable. Engineered to carry a load spanning two beams with no deck support underneath. Reinforced, heaviest, most expensive — and the only option if pallets go into racking. Never assume a stackable pallet is rackable.

The Three Load Numbers — Where Quotes Go Wrong

Most non-comparable quotes come from a buyer specifying "5,000 lb" without saying which kind:

  1. Static load: stationary on a flat floor, often stacked. The largest number, and the one suppliers advertise.
  2. Dynamic load: moving on a forklift or conveyor.
  3. Racking load: unsupported across beams. Always the smallest, often less than 10% of static.
  4. Ask for all three plus the test method and the support condition. A pallet rated 30,000 lb static may be rated 2,800 lb in a rack — and the rack number is the only one that matters if you are racking it. The full specification language and an RFQ template are in the plastic pallet specification guide.

Used pallets are a reasonable buy for non-critical floor storage. They are the wrong buy for racking, food contact or anywhere a failure creates a safety event, because the rating history is gone.

Cost Per Trip, Not Cost Per Pallet

A $22 nestable pallet at 40 trips costs $0.55 per trip. A $68 rackable pallet at 200 trips costs $0.34 per trip and does not shed splinters, nails or moisture into your product. Add the hidden costs wood carries: replacement rate, ISPM 15 treatment on exports, sanitation risk, and injury claims from broken boards. Model it in the cost per trip calculator.

What to Send Us for a Comparable Quote

Four lines are enough to price accurately:

  5. Footprint and quantity per year.
  6. Handling: racked, floor-stacked, one-way, conveyor.
  7. Heaviest load and which rating it applies to.
  8. Environment: ambient, freezer, washdown, food contact, export.
  9. FAQ

How much weight can a plastic pallet hold?

Typically 15,000-30,000 lb static, 2,000-5,000 lb dynamic, and 1,500-3,000 lb racked and unsupported. The racking number governs any pallet that goes into beam racking.

How much does a plastic pallet weigh?

About 12-20 lb for nestable pallets and 35-70 lb for heavy-duty rackable pallets.

Where can I buy plastic pallets?

LT Plastics supplies plastic pallets across the United States and Mexico with quotes returned in 24 hours. Send footprint, annual quantity, handling method and load, and you get a specification-matched price.

Are plastic pallets better than wood?

For closed loops, food plants, freezer routes and export lanes, yes — longer life, washable, no ISPM 15 treatment, no nails or splinters. For one-way low-value outbound shipments wood is often still cheaper per trip.

Are used plastic pallets worth buying?

For non-critical floor storage, yes. Not for racking or food contact, where the original load ratings can no longer be verified.
