How to Calculate Pallets Per Container
Efficient container loading starts with knowing exactly how many pallets fit. Our calculator tests both orientations (lengthwise and crosswise) and shows you the optimal layout.
Standard Pallet Sizes
- GMA Pallet (48" × 40"): The US standard, used by grocery, retail, and manufacturing. Fits 20-24 per 40ft container.
- Euro Pallet (120 × 80 cm): The European standard (EPAL/EUR). Fits 23-24 per 40ft container.
- ISO Pallet (110 × 110 cm): Common in Asia-Pacific markets. Fits 18-20 per 40ft container.
See the full standard pallet sizes and dimensions guide for every GMA, Euro and ISO footprint with weight capacities and container fit counts.
Maximizing Container Utilization
Most shippers achieve only 75-85% floor utilization. Tips to improve:
- Test both pallet orientations — our calculator does this automatically
- Use stackable bulk bins to fill vertical space
- Consider nestable containers that reduce empty return shipping costs by 50%+
- Use High Cube containers (+30 cm height) for lighter, bulky loads
