Plastic Pallet Specification and RFQ Guide for Procurement Teams
The specification language and RFQ template procurement teams use to buy plastic pallets on comparable terms instead of comparing incomparable quotes.

TL;DR: Most plastic pallet quotes are not comparable because the buyer never specified load type. A pallet rated for 5,000 lb static may carry only a fraction of that in a rack. A complete specification states footprint, static load, dynamic load, racking load and support condition, deck type, entry type, temperature range, resin and any hygiene or detectability requirement, then asks the supplier to state the test method behind each number. Everything below is written so you can paste it into an RFQ.
Quick Facts
| Specification field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Footprint | Must match racking, conveyor and trailer plan |
| Static load | Stacked on the floor, not the governing number |
| Dynamic load | On a forklift or pallet jack, in motion |
| Racking load | Unsupported span in a rack; always the lowest |
| Support condition | Edge rack, flow rack, drive-in; changes the rating |
| Deck type | Solid for hygiene, open for drainage and weight |
| Entry type | 2-way vs 4-way, matched to handling equipment |
| Temperature range | Freezer grades resist cold embrittlement |
| Resin | HDPE or PP; recycled content affects performance |
| Detectability | Metal-detectable additive for food lines |
The Three Load Ratings, and Why Buyers Confuse Them
Static load is the maximum weight the pallet can carry sitting on a flat floor, typically the largest and least useful number for planning. Dynamic load is the maximum weight while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack. Racking load is the maximum weight when the pallet is supported only at its edges in a rack beam, and it is nearly always the lowest of the three, often by a wide margin.
If your operation racks pallets, the racking rating is your specification. A supplier quoting only static load is not being helpful, and comparing two quotes on their headline numbers when one is static and the other racking is how plants end up with deflection failures in the rack.
Racking capacity also depends on support geometry. A pallet rated in a two-beam edge rack has a different capacity in a drive-in rack or on a flow-rail. State your rack configuration in the RFQ and require the supplier's rating to match it.
Testing Reference
ISO 8611 defines the standard test methods for pallets, covering bending under load, compression, drop and stiffness. Asking a supplier which parts of ISO 8611 their published ratings correspond to separates engineered products from marketing numbers, and it costs nothing to ask.
Plastic vs Wood, on Cost Per Cycle
Wood is cheaper to buy, every time. Plastic wins in operations where it is reused many times and where sanitation, weight consistency, splinter and nail elimination, dimensional stability or automation compatibility carry real cost. The correct comparison is cost per cycle: purchase price divided by achieved cycles, plus repair, plus sanitation, plus the cost of line stoppages caused by pallet failure in automated equipment. Consistent dimensions matter enormously in automated warehouses, where a warped or nail-shedding wood pallet becomes a jam and a downtime event.
For food plants, add the sanitation dimension covered in our FSMA 204 container and pallet checklist, and see our sanitary pallets specifications.

Requiring tiered pricing and freight separately is what makes quotes comparable. A delivered price with a hidden freight component is not a price you can benchmark.

FAQ
How much do plastic pallets cost?
Price varies widely by size, load rating, resin and volume tier, so any single figure is misleading. Request pricing at three volume tiers with freight quoted separately, and compare on cost per cycle rather than unit price.
What is the difference between static, dynamic and racking load?
Static is the load on a flat floor, dynamic is the load while being moved, and racking is the load when the pallet is supported only at its edges in a rack. Racking is normally the lowest rating and should govern any racked application.
What standard covers plastic pallet testing?
ISO 8611 defines pallet test methods including bending, compression, drop and durability. Ask suppliers which sections their published ratings correspond to.
Are plastic pallets better than wood pallets?
They cost more to buy and win on reuse, sanitation, dimensional consistency and automation compatibility. Wood remains cheaper for one-way and low-cycle shipping.
Do plastic pallets work in freezers?
Freezer-grade formulations are specified to resist cold-temperature embrittlement. Confirm the rated operating temperature range and require load ratings measured at your lowest service temperature.
What is a detectable plastic pallet?
A pallet molded with an additive that makes fragments detectable by metal or X-ray inspection systems, used on food lines where foreign-object control is part of the HACCP plan.
