TL;DR: A pallet box is a bulk container built to the 48 x 40 in GMA pallet footprint, in heights from 30 to 50 in. Corrugated pallet boxes cost the least per unit and carry 1,000-2,500 lb for one to five trips. HDPE pallet boxes cost more up front and run 250+ trips, which is where the per-trip cost inverts.

    What "Pallet Box" Actually Means

The term covers three different products sold under one name, and quotes are only comparable within a type:

  1. Corrugated pallet box (gaylord). Multi-wall board on a wood or plastic pallet, sometimes with a separate cap. Cheap, disposable, moisture-sensitive.
  2. Plastic pallet box / bulk bin. Rotomolded or injection-molded HDPE, integrated base, forklift entry on 2 or 4 ways. Reusable, washable, freezer-capable.
  3. Sleeve pack / combo bin. Base, collapsible sleeve and lid. Ships and returns knocked down, cutting return freight and storage footprint.
  4. Sizing: Two Numbers Decide Everything

    Cubic capacity = (L x W x H in inches) / 1,728, minus 5-8% for liner slack and fill headspace.

Load = cubic capacity x bulk density of your product.

A 48 x 40 x 40 in box yields about 41 usable ft³. At 35 lb/ft³ that is roughly 1,435 lb — already beyond a 3-wall corrugated rating. Specify height for volume and construction for load; using height to solve a load problem is how boxes fail in transit.

The break-even is loop discipline, not volume. If the box comes back, HDPE wins decisively. If it leaves with the product and never returns, corrugated is the honest answer. Trailer and Racking Fit

Because the footprint is 48 x 40 in, a 53 ft dry van takes 26 pallet positions two-across, or 20-22 when boxes are loaded pinwheel-free with dunnage allowance. Double-stacking depends on the box, not the trailer: HDPE bins stack loaded reliably; corrugated ratings assume dry conditions and perfect alignment. Details on loading are in the trailer and truck pallet capacity guide.

  13. FAQ

How big is a pallet box?

The standard base is 48 x 40 in, matching the GMA pallet, with heights typically between 30 and 48 in. A 48 x 40 x 40 in box holds about 44 ft³ gross and 41 ft³ usable.

How much weight can a pallet box hold?

Corrugated runs roughly 1,000-1,200 lb for 3-wall and up to 2,500 lb for 5-wall in dry conditions. HDPE pallet boxes are typically rated 1,500-2,600 lb and hold their rating when wet or cold.

Are plastic pallet boxes worth the extra cost?

In a closed loop, yes — the cost per trip is a fraction of corrugated once the box completes more than a handful of cycles. For one-way shipments that never return, corrugated remains cheaper.

Can pallet boxes be stacked when loaded?

HDPE pallet boxes are designed for loaded stacking within their rated height. Corrugated stacking ratings assume dry board and aligned stacks; humidity and misalignment cut them sharply.

How many pallet boxes fit in a 53 ft trailer?

26 floor positions two-across at 48 x 40 in, commonly loaded at 20-22 to allow handling clearance. Double-stacking depends on box strength and total weight.

Do you sell pallet boxes with lids and drains?

Yes — lids, drain fittings, discharge gates and casters are configured with the quote. Send capacity, quantity and ship-to ZIP for a firm number within 24 hours.
