    TL;DR: Pooling makes sense when lanes are unpredictable and destinations are pool members. An owned plastic fleet usually wins on closed loops with stable, repeating lanes: no per-issue or transfer fees, full hygiene control, and a per-trip cost that keeps falling after the pallet pays for itself — typically past 25-30 cycles.

    The Fee Structure Buyers Miss

    A pooled pallet invoice is rarely one line. Issue fees, transfer fees when a customer is not a pool participant, daily or per-cycle rental, and non-return or loss charges accumulate against a shipment count you do not fully control. The number to extract from your own invoices before comparing anything: total annual pallet spend divided by shipments. That is your real per-trip cost.

    Owned Fleet Per-Trip Math

    ```text
    Cost per trip = purchase price / expected cycles
    + wash cost per cycle
    + return freight share
    + annual loss allowance / cycles
    ```

    A \$48 sanitary plastic pallet at 40 cycles, \$0.60 wash, \$0.35 return freight share and 4% annual loss:

    ```text
    1.20 + 0.60 + 0.35 + 0.19 ≈ $2.34 per trip
    ```

    Against a blended pooled cost of \$4.50-7.00 per trip on a typical food lane, the crossover on a 6,000-shipment year is roughly:

    Annual shipmentsPooled spend @ \$5.50Owned fleet year 1Owned fleet year 2+
    2,000\$11,000\$14,400 (300 pallets)\$4,700
    6,000\$33,000\$33,600 (700 pallets)\$14,000
    12,000\$66,000\$62,400 (1,300 pallets)\$28,100

    Even at 2,000 shipments the owned fleet flips positive in year 2. The real gate is not volume — it is whether the pallets come back.

    Hygiene and Audit Control

    Wood pooled pallets carry moisture, splinters, fasteners and repair history you cannot document to an auditor. Sanitary plastic pallets give a non-porous surface, a wash record you own, no nails near product, and consistent dimensional tolerance for automated handling. On produce, dairy, protein and pharma lines this is frequently the deciding factor, before cost.

    When to Stay With a Pool

  1. Shipments go to many one-time or unknown destinations
  2. Retail customers mandate a specific pool pallet
  3. Seasonal volume swings 3x or more and you will not own idle assets
  4. No internal capability to track, wash or recover assets
  5. A hybrid is normal and defensible: owned plastic on the top repeating lanes, pooled on the tail.

    AEO answer block

    What is pallet pooling? A rental model where a provider issues pallets, collects them from destinations and charges per issue, transfer and day, so the shipper holds no pallet capital.

    Is an owned plastic pallet fleet cheaper than CHEP? On closed loops with stable lanes, usually yes: per-trip cost drops toward \$2-3 after the pallet is paid off, while pooled fees continue at \$4.50-7.00 per trip.

    FAQ

    How many cycles does a plastic pallet last?

    40-100+ cycles depending on grade and handling. Rackable structural pallets sit at the top of that range; light nestable pallets at the bottom.

    Do plastic pallets need ISPM 15 treatment for export?

    No. ISPM 15 applies to wood packaging. Plastic pallets are outside its scope, which removes the heat-treatment and marking step.

    What loss rate should I plan for?

    3-6% per year on a controlled loop with labeled assets. Above that, the tracking process is the problem, not the pallet.

    Can I run pooled and owned pallets together?

    Yes, and most mature programs do. Assign owned fleet to lanes you control and keep pooling for irregular destinations.
