TL;DR: A gaylord box is a large, pallet-sized corrugated container used to ship and store bulk material. The standard footprint is 48 x 40 in — the same as a GMA pallet — with heights from 36 to 48 in. Wall count sets the load: about 1,000 lb for 3-wall, up to 2,500 lb for 5-wall.

    The Definition, Without the Jargon

A gaylord box is one box that fills an entire pallet. Instead of stacking dozens of cartons, you load loose or bagged material into a single container that a forklift moves as one unit. That is the whole idea: fewer handling touches per pound of product.

The name is genericized trademark. Gaylord Container Corporation made these boxes at scale, and warehouses started calling every pallet-sized bulk box a "gaylord" the same way people say dumpster or thermos. Suppliers also sell the identical product as a bulk box, bulk bin, tote box or pallet box.

What Gaylord Boxes Are Used For

  1. Recycling and scrap: collecting plastic regrind, paper, e-waste and metal offcuts.
  2. Food processing: produce, grain, dry ingredients and frozen product, always with a liner.
  3. Manufacturing WIP: moving parts between cells and to secondary operations.
  4. Bulk distribution: shipping high-volume, low-value goods where returning packaging is not practical.
  5. Agriculture: field-to-plant transfer of harvested crops.
  6. The Two Specs That Actually Matter

Footprint decides whether the box fits your racking, your forklift and your trailer plan. 48 x 40 in is the default because it matches the GMA pallet — see the standard pallet sizes reference.

Wall count decides how much it carries. Height adds volume, not strength. A 48 in tall 3-wall box holds more cubic feet than a 36 in tall 5-wall box and carries far less weight. Specifying height to solve a weight problem is the most common and most expensive mistake in bulk packaging, because the failure happens in transit.

Full dimensional and grade tables are in the gaylord box sizes and grades reference.

How Much Does a Gaylord Box Weigh?

Empty, a 3-wall box runs roughly 25-40 lb and a 5-wall box 45-60 lb. That matters twice: it is deadweight on every freight invoice, and it is the difference between a one-person and a two-person setup on the floor. Filled weight is bulk density x usable volume — at 35 lb/ft³ a 41 ft³ box holds about 1,435 lb of product, which already exceeds a 3-wall rating.

    When Corrugated Stops Making Sense

Corrugated wins on unit price for one-way outbound shipments. It loses badly wherever the box comes back or gets wet:

If material moves in a closed loop — plant to plant, a returnable route, refrigerated or washdown environments, or direct food contact — the per-trip math flips to HDPE well before year one. Run your own numbers in the cost per trip calculator, or compare the two side by side in gaylord boxes vs rigid HDPE bulk containers.

    FAQ

    What is a gaylord box?

A pallet-sized corrugated bulk container, usually 48 x 40 in at the base and 36-48 in tall, used to move loose bulk material as a single forklift unit instead of many smaller cartons.

What are gaylord boxes used for?

Recycling and scrap collection, food and agricultural bulk transfer, work-in-process staging in manufacturing, and high-volume distribution of low-value goods.

How big is a gaylord box?

The common size is 48 x 40 in at the base with a height between 36 and 48 in, giving roughly 40-53 ft³ of volume. 41 x 41 in and 48 x 44 in footprints also exist.

How much does a gaylord box hold?

A 3-wall box carries about 1,000-1,200 lb; a 5-wall box carries 2,000-2,500 lb. Volume is set by height, load capacity by wall count.

Why are they called gaylord boxes?

After Gaylord Container Corporation. The brand name became the generic industry term, like dumpster or thermos.

Is a gaylord box the same as a bulk bin?

In corrugated, yes — bulk box, bulk bin, tote box and pallet box all describe the same thing. A rigid plastic bulk bin is a different, reusable product.
