TL;DR: FSMA 204 does not certify containers. It requires covered firms handling foods on the Food Traceability List to keep Key Data Elements at defined Critical Tracking Events and produce them to FDA in an electronic sortable spreadsheet within 24 hours of request.

The container and pallet matter because traceability lot codes have to survive handling, be readable at every event, and sit on surfaces that a sanitation program can verify. Choose containers that hold a durable lot identifier and clean reliably; the compliance obligation itself sits with your records system.

What the Rule Actually Says About Packaging

This is the point most vendor content gets wrong, so state it plainly: there is no FSMA 204 approved container. The rule is a records rule. It defines events in the supply chain, harvesting, cooling, initial packing, first land-based receiving, shipping, receiving and transformation, and the data you must keep for each. Packaging becomes relevant only as the physical carrier of the traceability lot code and as part of the sanitation environment your preventive controls plan already covers under 21 CFR Part 117.

Treat any supplier claiming FSMA 204 certified packaging as a signal to verify everything else they tell you.

The Sanitary Design Requirements That Do Bind

Separate from 204, if you handle food you are already subject to sanitary design and preventive controls expectations. In practice that means container surfaces that are non-porous and non-absorbent, no crevices or open seams that harbor residue, drainage that prevents standing water, resistance to your specific wash chemistry and temperature, and resin compliant with 21 CFR 177.1520 for polyolefins in food contact.

Wood does not meet several of these consistently, which is why plant sanitation programs move to plastic. Our sanitary pallets, food-grade totes and FDA plastic tanks are specified for exactly these conditions.

    Implementation Checklist for Processors

  1. Confirm whether any product you handle appears on FDA's Food Traceability List, including ingredient-level exposure.
  2. Map your Critical Tracking Events end to end and name the system of record for each.
  3. Define where the traceability lot code is assigned and how it is carried physically, on the container, the pallet, or both.
  4. Standardize label placement and material so codes survive wash, freeze and condensation.
  5. Verify that scanning happens at the event, not retroactively at end of shift.
  6. Test the 24-hour production requirement with a live drill, and time it.
  7. Align supplier and customer data exchange formats before you need them under audit.
  8. Document container cleaning and inspection frequency in your sanitation SOPs.
  9. Retire containers with cracks, deep gouges or unreadable identifiers; damaged surfaces are both a sanitation and a traceability failure.
  10. Where Programs Fail Audits

Most gaps are not exotic. Lot codes are applied to a pallet but transformation happens at container level, so the link breaks. Labels come off in the wash. Two systems hold half the data each and no one can join them in a spreadsheet inside 24 hours. Receiving scans are batched at end of shift, so the timestamp does not reflect the event. Fix the physical identification layer and the data layer together, because a records system cannot recover information the container never carried.

    FAQ

    What is FSMA 204?

FSMA 204 is FDA's Food Traceability Rule, which requires firms handling foods on the Food Traceability List to keep Key Data Elements for defined Critical Tracking Events and provide them to FDA in an electronic sortable spreadsheet within 24 hours of a request.

Does FSMA 204 require specific containers or pallets?

No. The rule governs records, not packaging. Containers matter because they carry the traceability lot code and must be compatible with your sanitation program, but no container is certified under FSMA 204.

What are Key Data Elements and Critical Tracking Events?

Critical Tracking Events are the supply chain steps the rule covers, such as shipping, receiving and transformation. Key Data Elements are the specific data points, such as traceability lot code, location identifier, quantity and date, that must be recorded for each of those events.

Are plastic pallets required for food safety compliance?

They are not required by rule, but non-porous plastic pallets are far easier to clean, inspect and verify than wood, which is why many processors adopt them to satisfy sanitary design and preventive controls expectations.

What resin standard applies to food-contact plastic containers?

Polyolefins used in food contact are commonly evaluated against 21 CFR 177.1520. Request material compliance documentation from your supplier and keep it with your food safety plan.

How fast must traceability records be produced to FDA?

Within 24 hours of a request, in an electronic sortable spreadsheet format. Firms should rehearse this with a timed internal drill rather than assume their systems can join the data on demand.
