IBC Totes for Sale: New vs Reconditioned, 275 vs 330 Gallon [2026]

What actually separates a new, reconditioned and used IBC tote — specs, valve and cage inspection points, food-grade limits and the per-trip math that decides between a caged tote and a rigid HDPE bin.

TL;DR: A new 275-gallon IBC tote is the default for food, potable and chemical service. Reconditioned totes (washed, new inner bottle or tested bottle, same cage) cost less and suit non-food industrial fluids. Used totes carry unverifiable prior contents and belong only in non-critical, non-consumable duty.

The Three Grades Sold as "IBC Totes"

Every listing falls into one of three categories, and the price gap between them is the risk gap.

  1. New (virgin bottle, new cage). Full traceability of the resin, no prior contents, and the only grade you can defend in a food-safety or chemical audit. Highest unit price, longest service life.
  2. Reconditioned / rebottled. The steel cage and pallet are reused; the inner HDPE bottle is replaced with a new one or pressure-tested after cleaning. Good economics for non-food industrial fluids where the cage's cosmetic condition does not matter.
  3. Used / "washed". Sold as-is after a rinse. Prior contents are frequently undocumented. Acceptable for rainwater capture, non-potable irrigation, ballast or waste collection — not for anything a person or animal will consume, and not for chemicals that could react with residue.
  4. If a seller cannot tell you what was in the bottle, treat the tote as used regardless of how it is labeled.

275 vs 330 Gallon: the Decision Is Vertical, Not Horizontal

Both sizes share the 48 x 40 in GMA footprint, so floor plan and forklift access are identical. The difference is height and filled weight. A 330-gallon tote at ~2,900 lb full pushes past the rated capacity of some older racking beams and many liftgates, and the extra 7 in of height can break a two-high stack under a sprinkler clearance line. Confirm three numbers before ordering the larger unit: beam capacity, door and trailer height, and dock equipment rating.

What to Inspect Before You Pay

  5. Inner bottle. Hazing, stress crazing near the corners, deformation at the base. Any bulge means the bottle has been overloaded or heat-cycled.
  6. Valve and gasket. Operate the butterfly valve fully. Cracked gaskets and stiff handles are the most common source of drips on reconditioned units.
  7. Cage welds. Check every corner weld and the tube where forks contact. A cracked lower rail cannot be safely stacked.
  8. Pallet base. Steel bases rust; wood bases fail ISPM 15 for export. Composite and plastic bases wash down.
  9. Label and UN marking. For regulated liquids, the UN 31HA1 marking and its date matter. Most jurisdictions limit reuse for hazmat service by age from the date of manufacture.
  10. Prior-contents documentation. No paperwork, no food or potable use.
  11. Where a Rigid HDPE Bulk Container Wins

A caged IBC is built around a flexible bottle and a steel frame. That is efficient for liquids and poor for solids, washdown loops and cold environments. In a closed loop the per-trip math often favors a rotomolded rigid container.

Total Landed Cost, Not Unit Price

Four line items move the real number more than the tote price:

  12. Freight. Totes are cube-limited. A partial load pays the same trailer as a full one; consolidating to 20 floor positions in a 53 ft van is the single biggest saving.
  13. Accessories. Lids, dust caps, adapters and drain fittings quoted after the fact usually cost more than quoted with the order.
  14. Cleaning. If the plan is to reuse for a different product, add validated cleaning cost per cycle.
  15. Disposal. End-of-life handling of a failed bottle is a real cost that reconditioned pricing hides.
  16. FAQ

How much does an IBC tote cost?

Price depends on grade (new, reconditioned or used), pallet base, valve configuration, quantity and freight lane, so the honest answer is a quoted configuration rather than a list price. Send capacity, quantity and ship-to ZIP for a firm number within 24 hours.

Where can I buy used IBC totes?

Used totes come from reconditioners and industrial liquidators. They are workable for non-consumable duty such as rainwater or waste collection. For food, potable water or chemical service, buy new — prior contents on a used bottle cannot be verified.

    Are reconditioned IBC totes safe?

Rebottled units with a new inner bottle and a tested cage are safe for non-food industrial fluids. A rinse-only "washed" tote is not equivalent and should not be treated as such.

What is the difference between a 275 and a 330 gallon IBC tote?

Same 48 x 40 in footprint; the 330 is roughly 7 in taller and about 475 lb heavier when full of water. Check racking beam capacity, door height and liftgate rating before choosing the larger unit.

Can I stack IBC totes when full?

Two-high is typical for filled units on level ground with aligned frames. Misaligned stacks concentrate load on one corner post and void the rating.

    Do you sell used totes?

We quote new rotomolded HDPE containers and food-grade totes. For food-contact applications used inventory is not a compliant option, which is why we do not offer it.
