TL;DR: An IBC tote is a 275 or 330 gallon intermediate bulk container — an HDPE bottle inside a steel cage on an integrated pallet. It is food grade only when the resin is FDA-compliant and the documented prior contents were food. Full totes stack 2-3 high by rating; a cleaned tote is only as good as the record proving it was cleaned.

    What an IBC Tote Is

Three parts working together: a blow-molded HDPE inner bottle, a welded steel cage that carries the stacking and impact load, and a pallet base — steel, plastic or wood — for forklift and pallet-jack handling. "Intermediate" means it sits between drums and bulk tankers: one tote replaces roughly five 55-gallon drums on the same footprint. Full dimensional data is in the IBC tote sizes and dimensions reference.

    Are IBC Totes Food Grade?

    Two conditions, both required:

  1. The resin is FDA-compliant for food contact under 21 CFR 177.1520, documented by the manufacturer.
  2. The documented prior contents were food. A tote that carried a solvent or an agricultural chemical does not become food grade after cleaning. The polymer absorbs and slowly releases some compounds, and no wash reverses that.
  3. That second condition is where "food grade used totes" sold online fall apart: without a verifiable prior-contents record, the tote fails a food-safety audit no matter how clean it looks. Under FSMA 204 traceability requirements you must be able to prove what touched the product. If food contact matters, buy new food-grade, or use a rigid FDA-compliant HDPE bulk container built for repeated washdown.

How to Clean an IBC Tote

    A defensible procedure, in order:

  4. Empty and document the prior contents and any SDS handling requirements.
  5. Pre-rinse with potable water to remove bulk residue; capture the effluent.
  6. Caustic or detergent wash at the temperature and concentration the chemistry specifies — hot water alone will not remove fats or sugars.
  7. Rinse to neutral and verify with a pH check.
  8. Sanitize with an approved food-contact sanitizer at label concentration and contact time.
  9. Final potable rinse, if the sanitizer requires it.
  10. Inspect bottle for stress cracks and cloudiness, cage welds, valve and gasket.
  11. Dry and seal, then document the batch: date, operator, chemistry, concentration, verification result.
  12. Step 9 is the one auditors actually read. Cleaning without a record is not cleaning. Our container cleaning and sanitization guide has the full validation detail.

    Are IBC Totes Stackable?

Filled totes stack 2-3 high per the manufacturer's rating, and only when:

  13. Stacks are square — the cage transfers load through its corner posts, so misalignment loses capacity fast.
  14. The floor is level and rated for the point loads.
  15. No cage member is bent. A deformed post has lost its rating even if it looks serviceable.
  16. Empty totes should not be stacked loose; they are light, top-heavy and prone to walking. Where empty-return cube drives your cost, collapsible or nesting containers beat cages outright — see collapsible vs rigid bulk containers.

    Reading the Label

The UN marking is a specification, not decoration. A typical string reads:

    31HA1 / Y / 0322 / USA / M1234 / 1040 / 1500

    SegmentMeaning
    31Composite IBC for liquids
HA1Plastic inner receptacle with steel outer frame
YPacking group II and III (medium hazard)
0322Month and year of manufacture — March 2022
    USACountry of certification
    M1234Manufacturer / certification code
    1040Capacity in liters
1500Maximum permitted gross mass or stacking test load, in kg

Two practical uses: the manufacture date tells you whether the tote is inside its typical 5-year service window for hazardous contents, and the packing-group letter tells you which materials it is certified to carry. If the plate is unreadable, the tote has no verifiable rating.

    FAQ

    What is an IBC tote?

A 275 or 330 gallon intermediate bulk container built from an HDPE inner bottle, a steel outer cage and an integrated pallet base, sized to the 48 x 40 in GMA footprint.

    Are IBC totes food grade?

Only if the resin is FDA-compliant for food contact and the documented prior contents were food. Cleaning does not convert a chemical tote into a food-grade one.

How do you clean an IBC tote?

Pre-rinse, detergent or caustic wash at the specified temperature and concentration, rinse to neutral pH, sanitize, final rinse, inspect the bottle and cage, then record the batch details.

    Are IBC totes stackable?

Filled totes stack 2-3 high per the manufacturer rating on level floors with square stacks and undamaged cages. Loose empties should not be stacked.

How many gallons is an IBC tote?

275 gallons (1,040 L) is the standard; 330 gallons (1,250 L) is the larger size on the same footprint.

What do the numbers on an IBC tote label mean?

The UN marking encodes IBC type and construction, packing group, manufacture date, country, manufacturer code, capacity in liters and maximum gross mass or stacking load.
