FDA Food Grade Containers: Food-Contact Checklist
A food-contact claim is not enough to specify a container. Check the finished configuration, the intended food and temperature, and the documents your quality team needs before placing an order.

TL;DR — does FDA compliant mean food grade? Not by itself. A food-contact component must have an applicable regulatory basis and meet its conditions of use. “Food grade” is not a blanket FDA certification of a finished container. Check the specific container, additives, accessories, food type, temperature and reuse conditions—not just whether the base polymer is HDPE.
Quick Facts
| Claim or document | What it can establish | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| 21 CFR 177.1520 reference | Applicable requirements for certain olefin polymers under stated limitations | Every finished HDPE article is suitable for every food and temperature |
| Supplier letter of guaranty or compliance | A written basis for the specified product and intended use | A blanket FDA-issued certificate for all configurations |
| Resin identification | What the base material is | Colorants, gaskets, lids and valves have the same authorization |
| NSF listing | Certification to the particular listed standard and scope | Automatic certification of other models or FDA approval |
| Cleaning procedure | How your facility intends to clean the container | Validation that it works for your soil, allergens and conditions |
The question to ask before requesting an “FDA certificate”
State what the container will touch and how it will be used: dry flour, fatty ingredients, acidic liquid or another specific food; filling and storage temperature; contact duration; repeated use; cleaning chemicals and temperatures. FDA's food types and conditions of use distinguish applications rather than treating every food-contact use alike.
A room-temperature dry-ingredient application is not evidence that the same configuration can handle hot fatty food or an aggressive wash cycle. Ask the supplier to address the actual use in writing.
What 21 CFR 177.1520 does—and does not—say
21 CFR 177.1520 covers olefin polymers with specifications and limitations. Relevant authorizations may also involve other regulations or Food Contact Notifications. Check all food-contact components, not only the resin family.
Do not interpret this section as a universal ban on recycled plastic or a rule requiring the same set of test reports to accompany every shipment. FDA has separate guidance on recycled plastics in food packaging. Suitability depends on the process, material and intended use. A recycling no-objection letter is not a substitute for checking the finished product's full regulatory basis.
An SDS describes hazards and handling; it is not, by itself, proof of food-contact suitability. Likewise, “BPA-free” does not resolve authorization, migration or sanitation questions.
Buyer document checklist
Ask for the following as procurement evidence, not as a claim that FDA mandates one universal packet:
Escalate gaps to your quality or regulatory specialist before ordering. A supplier statement should refer to the actual model—not an unrelated resin or a whole product family without scope.
Food contact is not the same as sanitation performance
Smooth geometry can help access for cleaning; it does not prevent all microbial growth or prove allergen removal. Inspect corners, lids, seals, drain connections and damaged surfaces. Your cleaning method must match the food soil and the manufacturer's limits, and your facility must verify its effectiveness.
Use the container verification guide for document checks and the food-grade tank contamination guide for inspection and prior-use concerns. An unknown-history used container is a reason to stop and investigate, not to rely on its clean appearance.
Food-contact compliance also does not, by itself, establish FSMA traceability compliance. Keep material suitability separate from your facility's records and food-safety obligations. The FDA and food-safety hub connects those separate decisions.
Where Bonar options may fit
LT Plastics is an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor. Food-grade tote options, bulk bins and insulated containers serve different handling needs. Identify the required configuration and request its current documentation before selecting a model.
Insulation does not establish a holding time for your food and route; a pallet's suitability does not mean it directly contacts food; and a bin's gallon rating is not its allowable payload. Compare the actual application rather than assuming one food-contact claim covers all of these products.
For a multi-plant program, prepare one application brief per use: food, temperature, wash process, contact time, required certifications, annual quantity and sites. This lets purchasing compare the same requirements across suppliers and avoid approving a configuration that later fails the plant's review.

FAQ
Does FDA approval exist for food containers?
Do not treat an FDA-approved label as a blanket certificate for a finished container. Check the regulatory basis of every food-contact component and its conditions of use. Ask for a supplier statement covering the specific model, configuration, food and temperature.
What documents should a supplier provide for FDA compliant containers?
Request a model-specific compliance or guaranty statement identifying the regulatory basis and intended use, material and accessory details, manufacturer use limits, and supporting evidence your quality team needs. This is a procurement checklist, not a universal FDA requirement to include the same packet with every shipment.
Is NSF certification required in addition to FDA compliance?
Requirements depend on the application, customer and relevant authority. NSF certification has a defined model and standard scope; check the actual listing rather than assuming a whole product family is certified. It does not replace checking the applicable food-contact regulatory basis.
Can recycled HDPE be used for food-grade containers?
Recycled plastic is not universally banned from food-contact use. Evaluate its process, contamination controls, regulatory basis and intended use using FDA guidance. A recycling no-objection letter is not a substitute for checking all finished-product components and use limitations.
