TL;DR: Size a plastic water tank from three numbers: usable capacity, filled weight, and the footprint your pad can carry. Water weighs 8.34 lb per gallon, so a 1,000-gallon tank puts roughly 8,340 lb on the pad. Potable service requires FDA/NSF-grade resin and an opaque wall.

    Quick Facts

    CapacityTypical diameterTypical heightFilled weight (water)
    275 gal36 in68 in~2,295 lb
    500 gal46 in78 in~4,170 lb
    750 gal54 in82 in~6,255 lb
    1,000 gal64 in80 in~8,340 lb
    1,500 gal72 in92 in~12,510 lb
    2,500 gal90 in100 in~20,850 lb

Dimensions vary by manufacturer and by vertical vs low-profile geometry. Use these as a planning envelope and confirm against the quoted model.

Start With Filled Weight, Not Volume

The number that dictates the pad, the ring-3 wall and the forklift plan is weight:

  1. Water: 8.34 lb/gal (specific gravity 1.0)
  2. Filled weight = capacity x 8.34 x specific gravity of the liquid
  3. Add the tank's own dry weight, typically 3-6% of the filled load
  4. A 1,500-gallon tank of water is over 6 tons on a circle roughly 6 ft across. That is a concrete pad question, not a container question. Sizing shortcuts here are what cause tank failures — the tank does not fail, the base does.

Potable vs Chemical: Not the Same Tank

    FactorPotable water tankChemical storage tank
ResinFDA/NSF-grade virgin HDPEHDPE or XLPE by compatibility
    WallOpaque, algae-resistantOften opaque; UV-stabilized
Rated specific gravity1.01.5-1.9 depending on model
    Fittings and gasketsPotable-ratedChemical-specific elastomer

A tank rated only to 1.0 specific gravity will bulge and eventually fail when filled with a denser chemical. Check the rating on the model, not on the family.

    Vertical, Low-Profile or Cone Bottom

  5. Vertical closed-top. The default for bulk water and chemical storage. Best capacity per square foot of pad.
  6. Low-profile / free-standing horizontal. Lower center of gravity, fits under a ceiling height limit, easier to fill from a truck.
  7. Cone bottom. Full drain for slurries and settling product, but requires a stand and adds height.
  8. Open-top. Batch mixing and washdown work; requires a lid for potable duty.
  9. Fittings, Fill and Draw

Specify these with the order — retrofitting a bulkhead fitting into a molded wall is the most common source of leaks:

  10. Inlet. Size for the fill rate; add a screen for outdoor water capture.
  11. Outlet / bulkhead. Position it for the pump inlet height and add a shutoff.
  12. Vent. Every closed tank needs one sized for the fill and draw rate. A collapsed tank is nearly always an under-vented one.
  13. Level indication. Sight tube or sensor port.
  14. Manway. Access for cleaning and inspection.
  15. Tie-downs. Required for outdoor tanks in wind zones and for anything on a trailer.
  16. Site Prep in Five Lines

  17. Level, full-diameter support — no partial bearing, no timber cribbing under a full tank
  18. Concrete pad or compacted sand base with no point loads
  19. Freeze protection where applicable; ice expansion splits fittings before walls
  20. Access for the delivery truck and for annual cleaning
  21. Secondary containment where code requires it for chemicals
  22. Tank, Tote or Bulk Bin

A tank stores in a fixed position. A tote moves on a pallet. A bulk bin handles solids and washdown. If the liquid needs to travel by forklift and trailer, an IBC tote is the correct vessel; if it stays put, a tank costs less per gallon stored. Sizing math for both lives in the tank volume calculator, and the deeper selection detail is in the poly tank sizing and selection guide.

    FAQ

How much does a plastic water storage tank cost?

Cost tracks capacity, resin grade, specific-gravity rating, fittings and freight lane — tanks are cube-heavy and freight is often a large share of landed cost. Send capacity, liquid, ship-to ZIP and quantity for a firm quote within 24 hours.

How much does a 1,000 gallon water tank weigh when full?

About 8,340 lb of water plus the tank's dry weight. Plan the pad for at least 8,700 lb over roughly a 64 in diameter circle.

Can I use a chemical tank for drinking water?

No. Potable service requires FDA/NSF-grade resin and potable-rated fittings, and a tank with unknown chemical history cannot be re-qualified for drinking water.

What size tank do I need?

Work from peak daily draw times the number of days of autonomy you need, then add 10-15% freeboard. Two smaller tanks often beat one large one — they fit tighter sites and allow cleaning without shutting the system down.

Do plastic water tanks need to be vented?

Yes. Every closed tank needs a vent sized for the fill and draw rate. Under-venting collapses tanks during pump-out.

Are these tanks UV stable for outdoor use?

Specify a UV-stabilized, opaque wall for outdoor duty. Translucent walls grow algae and degrade faster in sun.
