Types of Industrial Hoppers: Discharge Selection Guide
Choose the discharge arrangement around your material and receiving equipment. A model number, wall angle or larger volume does not guarantee reliable flow.

Quick answer: Choose an industrial hopper by discharge path, material behavior, outlet geometry and equipment clearance. Bottom, side and tipping arrangements serve different transfer needs. FlowMaster is a Bonar product family, not a universal flow guarantee; a 45-degree wall alone cannot establish that a cohesive material will discharge without bridging.
TL;DR: Bottom-discharge hoppers feed equipment below them; side-discharge hoppers deliver through a side outlet; tipping hoppers empty by rotating. FlowMaster is a Bonar product family, not a universal flow guarantee. Choose by material behavior, outlet size, receiver clearance and supported load. A 45-degree wall alone cannot prove that a material will discharge without bridging.
Quick Facts
| Arrangement | Useful starting application | Main check |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom discharge | Gravity transfer to a receiver below | Outlet, support and clearance for valve and receiving equipment |
| Side discharge | Transfer to an adjacent receiver | Outlet elevation and transfer path; gravity cannot move product uphill |
| Tipping/self-dumping | Scrap or waste transfer | Approved mechanism, forklift compatibility and operating procedure |
| Bonar FlowMaster | Enclosed dry-material handling configuration | Actual model, valve, material tests and sanitation requirements |
The tipping category describes equipment in the broader market. It is not a claim that every type is sold by LT Plastics. Start with the current hopper catalog to confirm available configurations.
First decide where the material must go
Draw the receiver, hopper support, outlet, valve and loading method. Record the working elevations and maintenance access. A side outlet does not automatically remove the need for elevation, a support structure or a transfer device. A bottom outlet requires enough clearance for both its mechanism and the equipment receiving the product.
Before purchase, confirm how the hopper is supported while dispensing. Fork pockets are a handling feature, not an instruction to dispense from a raised forklift. Follow manufacturer instructions and site procedures; OSHA materials-handling guidance provides general safety context.
Why a 45-degree angle does not guarantee flow
Bridging is an arch across an outlet. Ratholing occurs when a flow channel empties while material remains around it. Wall friction, cohesive strength, outlet dimensions, moisture, particle distribution and time at rest all affect behavior.
The angle of repose of a pile is not enough to specify the hopper wall angle. Reliable mass-flow design depends on material testing against the proposed wall surface and the outlet and feeder arrangement. AIChE's hopper-design article explains why material properties and geometry must be evaluated together.
If production already has stoppages, document when they occur: after storage, after humidity changes, near the end of a batch or only with one formulation. Request a qualified flow assessment or trial using representative material. Do not assume a brand name eliminates bridging, or strike or enter equipment to restore flow outside an approved procedure.
Model numbers are not cubic-yard capacities
The Bonar 8045 and 8090 model numbers are not 4.5 and 9.0 cubic yards. The current LT Plastics catalog records the following specifications; confirm the latest manufacturer drawing before approval.
| Model | Catalog volume | Catalog footprint | Catalog height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8045 | 11.5 cubic feet | 44 x 44 in | 31 in |
| 8090 | 32 cubic feet | 44 x 44 in | 50 in |
| 8096 variants | 35 or 45 cubic feet | 48 x 48 in | 52 or 64 in |
The 8045 and 8090 catalog entries list a 45-degree discharge angle. The FlowMaster is also described as a 45-degree family—not a generic 60–70-degree hopper. Confirm variant and accessories for your application. Volume and allowable load are separate limits.
Size for the batch and material density
Determine working volume from batch mass and measured bulk density. Include any process headspace needed, then check the product's allowable mass. Do not fill a container to its nominal volume when a dense material would exceed its load rating.
Required product volume = batch mass / bulk density, using consistent units.
For example, a 600 lb batch with measured bulk density of 40 lb per cubic foot occupies 15 cubic feet before headspace. This is an illustrative calculation, not a rating for a model. The receiver rate, refill cycle and valve behavior can still determine whether a larger hopper helps.
Choose material for the exposure—not a blanket ranking
HDPE does not rust, but that does not make it suitable for every abrasive, hot or chemically aggressive material. Steel, stainless steel and polymers have different temperature, wear, cleaning and structural characteristics. Request compatibility for the actual material, concentration, temperature and contact duration.
For food ingredients, check the finished configuration's food-contact requirements, including valves and seals. A smooth molded wall can aid access; it does not certify sanitation or eliminate cleaning validation.
A hopper request that can be evaluated
Use hopper selection by industry to relate the process to equipment needs. For a multi-site program, compare one specification across sites rather than standardizing on a model name alone.
FAQ
What are the main types of industrial hoppers?
Bottom discharge, side discharge and tipping arrangements describe how material exits. Geometry, valves and feeders refine that choice. FlowMaster is a named Bonar family within the available product options rather than a universal category.
Does a 45 degree bottom discharge hopper prevent bridging?
Not by angle alone. Outlet size, wall friction, cohesive strength, moisture and storage time all matter. Test representative material and evaluate the feeder arrangement when bridging would interrupt production.
Is the 8090 hopper nine cubic yards?
No. The current catalog lists 32 cubic feet for the 8090 model. Model numbers are identifiers, not capacity measurements. Confirm the manufacturer drawing, load limit and fitted accessories.
Can a side-discharge hopper load any truck at ground level?
No. Gravity transfer requires a workable outlet-to-receiver height difference and suitable flow path. Compare the actual equipment elevations and clearances before choosing supports or a transfer device.
Should I specify FlowMaster for every sticky material?
No. Confirm the specific configuration and evaluate the material's flow properties. A product name does not establish mass flow or compatibility with every cohesive material.
