TL;DR: Add the empty bin weight to the product weight (volume x bulk density), then compare the total with your forklift's rated capacity at the actual load center, which is shown on its data plate. Large bins and hoppers often put the load center beyond the standard 24 in, which reduces what the truck can safely lift. Also check the bin's own rated load and stacking limit.

Step 1: Calculate the Loaded Weight

    `Loaded weight = empty bin weight + (cu ft x bulk density)`

Example with the 8090 hopper: 32 cu ft of a product at 50 lb per cu ft is 1,600 lb, plus 195 lb empty = 1,795 lb, within the 2,000 lb rated load. The same hopper full of a product at 70 lb per cu ft would be 2,240 lb of product, above the rated load. Fill it only partially or choose another model.

Step 2: Check the Load Center

Forklift capacity is rated at a specific load center, commonly 24 in from the fork face. A 44 in deep bin carried normally has its center around 22 in, but a deeper bin, an uneven load or a fork attachment pushes the center out and reduces safe capacity. Read the data plate; if your load center is beyond the rated one, ask your forklift dealer for the derated capacity.

OSHA requires that only loads within the rated capacity of the truck are handled, and that the nameplate reflects any attachments.

Step 3: Check the Container Limits

  1. Rated load: do not exceed it, even if the forklift can.
  2. Stacking: a full bin on top adds its whole weight to the one below. Follow the model's stacking guidance.
  3. Fork entry: two-way vs four-way entry affects how the bin is picked up. See forklift compatible containers.
  4. Common Mistakes

  5. Using the product's weight per bag instead of bulk density in the bin.
  6. Forgetting the bin's own weight.
  7. Planning with a dry product that gets wet in washdown.
  8. Ignoring rotators or tippers, which add weight and shift the load center.
  9. When to Choose a Different Container

  10. Your full load exceeds the bin's rated load.
  11. Your trucks cannot handle the load at the real load center.
  12. You need to dump the bin with a rotator not designed for that size.

Send us your product, its bulk density, how you lift and dump the bins and your forklift capacity. We will match models from our bulk containers and hoppers categories.

  17. FAQ

How do I check the load capacity of a forklift?

Read the data plate on the truck. It lists the rated capacity at a specific load center and should be updated when attachments are added. Ask your dealer for derated values at longer load centers.

What is a forklift load center?

The distance from the fork face to the load's center of gravity. Capacity is rated at a given load center, commonly 24 in; a longer load center reduces safe capacity.

How much does a full plastic bulk bin weigh?

Add the empty bin weight from the spec sheet to the product weight: cubic feet times your product's bulk density in pounds per cubic foot.

Can I exceed a bin's rated load if the forklift can lift it?

No. The container's rated load is a separate limit. Exceeding it risks cracking, deformation and dropped loads.
