TL;DR: Bulk container pricing is driven by order volume, resin and color, accessories, freight lane and lead time — not by a list price. Renting wins for seasonal or short programs under roughly 18 months of use; buying wins in any closed loop that runs continuously, because cost per trip collapses after year two.

    Quick Facts

    Quote variableEffect on price
Order quantityLargest single lever; full-truckload buys move price most
Resin and colorFDA-compliant and custom color add cost; standard colors cost least
AccessoriesLids, drains, gates, casters, labels priced per unit
Freight laneCube-limited, not weight-limited; distance and backhaul matter
Lead timeRush production and expedited freight both add
Program lengthLonger horizon shifts the math toward buying
Return logisticsOwning a returnable fleet requires reverse freight planning

Why There Is No Published Price

Two buyers ordering "the same" container pay different amounts, correctly. One takes a full truckload in a standard color with no accessories on a dense lane. The other takes eight units in a custom color with lids and drain fittings to a remote delivery. Same product, very different landed cost. Published list pricing would be wrong for both, which is why we quote the configuration and the lane together.

What you can do is control the variables you own:

  1. Consolidate to full truckloads. Freight is the biggest hidden multiplier on rotomolded product because containers ship by cube, not weight. Partial loads pay for the empty space.
  2. Accept a standard color unless the color does operational work (line segregation, allergen control).
  3. Order accessories only where used. Lids on every unit when half the fleet is uncovered is spend with no return.
  4. Give real lead time. Scheduled production always beats rush.
  5. Quote annual volume, not the first order. A committed annual quantity gets priced differently than a one-off.
  6. Rent vs Buy: The Break-Even

Rental converts a capital purchase into a per-month cost and hands maintenance and washing to someone else. That is a genuine advantage in three cases: seasonal peaks, a program you have not proven yet, and a fixed-term contract with a defined end date. The full comparison lives in bulk container rental vs buying; the short version follows.

Buying wins when utilization is continuous:

    Program lengthUsually cheaperReason
Under 6 months, seasonalRentNo idle asset between seasons
6-18 months, unprovenRentPreserves flexibility while you validate
18 months to 3 yearsCompare directlyThis is where the lines cross
Over 3 years, closed loopBuyRental keeps charging; owned cost per trip keeps falling

Cost per trip = (purchase price + freight + annual maintenance x years) / total trips over the life

A container that costs a few hundred dollars landed and completes 250 trips over its life lands in the low single dollars per trip. That is the number to compare against rental per-cycle cost and against the disposable packaging it replaces. Run your own configuration in the cost per trip calculator.

Three factors people leave out of the comparison and should not:

  7. Rental damage charges. Read the damage schedule; abrasive or corrosive product changes the economics.
  8. Reverse logistics. Owning means you plan and pay for empty returns. Nested or collapsible units cut that cost sharply.
  9. Residual value. HDPE containers retain resale and recycling value at end of life; rental leaves you nothing.
  10. Plastic Pallet Pricing Follows the Same Logic

Plastic pallet price ranges widely because ratings do: a nestable display pallet and a rackable freezer-grade pallet are not comparable products. Price tracks the specification.

    Spec that moves pallet priceWhy
Static / dynamic / racking load ratingMore resin and structure at higher ratings
Nestable vs stackable vs rackableNestable saves return freight; rackable costs more to build
Freezer gradeImpact modifiers for low-temperature performance
Hygienic / open deckWashdown design for food and pharma
Reinforcement (steel bar)Adds racking capacity and cost

Compare per trip, never per unit. A wood pallet is cheaper on the invoice and loses on cycles, sanitation and shrink losses. See the plastic pallet sizing guide and the pallet calculator.

RFQ Checklist: What to Send Us for a Fast, Accurate Number

Send these eight items and you get a firm quote in 24 hours instead of a round of questions:

  11. Product and density. What goes inside, and lb/ft³ at worst-case moisture.
  12. Capacity and footprint required. Or the equipment it must fit.
  13. Quantity for the first order and for the year.
  14. Accessories: lids, drains, gates, casters, labeling.
  15. Compliance: food contact, freezer, chemical exposure.
  16. Ship-to ZIP and dock capability. Forklift, dock height, liftgate needed.
  17. In-service date.
  18. Loop or one-way, and who pays return freight if it is a loop.
  19. FAQ

How much does a plastic bulk container cost?

It depends on quantity, resin and color, accessories and freight lane, so we quote the configuration rather than publish a list price. Send capacity, quantity and ship-to ZIP and you get a firm number within 24 hours.

Is it cheaper to rent or buy bulk containers?

Rent for seasonal or unproven programs under about 18 months. Buy for continuous closed loops beyond roughly three years, where owned cost per trip keeps falling while rental keeps charging.

    What is a combo bin?

A combo bin is a bulk container built as a base, sleeve and lid that ships and stores knocked down, cutting return freight and storage footprint compared with a rigid one-piece container.

    What drives plastic pallet price?

Load rating, whether it is nestable, stackable or rackable, freezer grade, hygienic design and steel reinforcement. Compare cost per trip, not invoice price.

How do I lower my landed cost?

Consolidate to full truckloads, take a standard color, order accessories only where used, commit annual volume and give real lead time. Freight and rush production are the two largest avoidable costs.

Do you sell used bulk bins?

We quote new Bonar rotomolded containers. For food-contact applications prior contents cannot be verified on used units, which is why used inventory is not a compliant option there.

How fast can I get a quote?

Within 24 hours with the RFQ items above. Ships nationwide across the US and to Mexico.
