Rotomolded vs Injection Molded Containers: Tooling Cost and MOQ
Injection molding wins at very high volume; rotomolding wins on large, thick-walled containers at moderate volume. Here is how to decide on tooling and MOQ.

TL;DR: Choose injection molding for small to mid-size parts ordered in tens of thousands per year, where a high steel tooling cost is spread over many units. Choose rotomolding for large, thick-walled bulk containers, tanks and insulated boxes ordered in hundreds or low thousands, because aluminum rotomold tooling costs far less and existing catalog models need no tooling at all. LT Plastics, an authorized Bonar Plastics distributor based in Phoenix, AZ, supplies these containers and speed bumps to US plants and distribution centers.
Quick Facts
| Factor | Rotomolded | Injection molded |
|---|---|---|
| Tooling | Aluminum or cast mold, lower cost | Hardened steel mold, high cost |
| Best volume | Hundreds to low thousands per year | Tens of thousands and up |
| Part size | Very large parts practical | Size limited by press tonnage |
| Wall | Thick, uniform, stress-free corners | Thin, ribbed walls |
| Hollow and double-wall | Yes, foam-filled possible | Not in one shot |
| Catalog models | Often available, no tooling | Usually custom tooling |
The Real Question: Who Pays for the Tool
Injection molding has the lowest part cost at very high volume, but the steel tool is the largest upfront cost. For a 48 x 40 in bulk bin, that tool may be large and expensive enough that a plant buying a few hundred units a year never earns it back. Our injection molding companies directory lists suppliers if your volume justifies it.
When Rotomolding Is the Better Business Case
Large, heavy-duty containers
Rotomolded HDPE gives thick walls and rounded corners that handle forklift impact well. That is why most heavy bulk bins, hoppers and poly tanks are rotomolded.
Moderate volume
At hundreds of units per year, a lower-cost rotomold tool, or a catalog model with no tool at all, is usually the cheaper path.
Insulated and double-wall parts
Rotomolding makes hollow double-wall parts that can be foam-filled for cold chain. See standardizing containers across plants.
How to Estimate Break-Even
FAQ
Is injection molding tooling cost worth it for 500 units a year?
Rarely for large containers. The tool cost per unit stays high at that volume; a catalog rotomolded model is usually cheaper.
Is a rotomolded container stronger?
For large containers under impact, rotomolded thick walls usually perform better. Injection molding is stronger per pound in small, ribbed parts.
Can I customize a catalog rotomolded container without new tooling?
Often yes: color, drains, inserts, labeling and fork options can be added without a new mold.
