Insulated Tote Hold Time: Ice Ratio Math & Hold-Time Table
How to calculate hold time instead of guessing it: ice-to-product ratios by trip length, the BTU math behind melt rate, and a hold-time table by fill level and ambient temperature.

TL;DR: A rotomolded insulated tote with 2 in of foamed-in polyurethane holds product temperature for 24 to 72 hours depending on ambient heat, ice ratio and how often the lid opens. Plan seafood at a 1:1 ice-to-product ratio by weight for long hauls and 1:2 for short local runs.
Quick Facts
| Factor | Working value |
|---|---|
| Insulation | Foamed-in polyurethane, typically 1.5-2 in wall |
| Hold time (full load, lid closed) | 24-72 hours |
| Ice ratio, long haul (>24 h) | 1:1 by weight |
| Ice ratio, local (<12 h) | 1:2 by weight |
| Target seafood temperature | 32-34 F (0-1 C) |
| Ice melt latent heat | 144 BTU per lb of ice |
| Construction | Seamless rotomolded HDPE, FDA-compliant resin |
| Drain | Plugged drain outlet for meltwater |
What Actually Governs Hold Time
Insulation does not create cold; it slows heat entry. Ice is the refrigeration. Each pound of ice absorbs about 144 BTU as it melts, so hold time is simply ice mass divided by heat leak rate.
Four variables move that rate:
Ice Ratio Math You Can Check
Ice needed (lb) = (product lb x specific heat x temperature drop + heat leak BTU over the trip) / 144
For most practical planning:
| Trip duration | Ratio (ice : product, by weight) |
|---|---|
| Under 12 hours, local | 1:2 |
| 12-24 hours | 3:4 |
| Over 24 hours, long haul | 1:1 |
| Warm ambient (>90 F) | Add 25% |
Two operating rules that matter more than the arithmetic: bottom-ice before loading so meltwater does not run through product on top, and top-ice for the final layer since heat enters through the lid.
Model Capacity Chart
| Model | Approximate capacity | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| PB01 | Small batch | Portioned product, sampling, small processors |
| PB11 | Mid volume | Processing line transfer |
| PB660 | ~660 L class | Vessel and dock handling |
| PB1000 | ~1,000 L class | Bulk seafood, high-volume harvest |
| PB1801 | Largest class | Long-haul bulk cold chain |

Why Rotomolded Beats EPS Foam in a Loop
| Factor | EPS foam box | Rotomolded insulated tote |
|---|---|---|
| Trips | 1-2 | Hundreds |
| Washdown | Not practical | Full washdown, seamless interior |
| Pathogen harborage | Porous, damaged easily | Non-porous, no seams |
| Meltwater control | Leaks | Plugged drain |
| Stack integrity when wet | Degrades | Unchanged |
| Disposal cost | Every cycle | None |
The compliance argument outweighs the cost argument. A cracked or gouged foam surface cannot be verified clean, and under a preventive-controls program you must be able to verify. A seamless HDPE interior with an accessible drain can be cleaned, inspected and documented.

FAQ
How long do insulated totes hold temperature?
Typically 24 to 72 hours when fully loaded with the correct ice ratio and the lid kept closed. Partial loads, warm ambient exposure and frequent openings shorten this substantially.
What ice to fish ratio should I use?
1:1 by weight for trips over 24 hours, 1:2 for local runs under 12 hours, plus about 25% more in ambient above 90 F. Bottom-ice first, top-ice last.
Are insulated fish totes food grade?
Yes when specified in FDA-compliant resin. The seamless rotomolded interior with no weld seams is what makes washdown and sanitation verification possible.
Can insulated totes be stacked when loaded?
Yes within the published stacking rating. Verify the rating against filled weight including ice and meltwater, and keep stacks aligned so load stays over the corner posts.
Do I still need refrigerated transport?
For short hauls a properly iced insulated tote frequently substitutes for reefer capacity. For multi-day transport treat the tote as a buffer that protects product during handling gaps, not as a replacement for a controlled trailer.
Why not use foam boxes?
They are cheaper per unit and more expensive per trip, cannot be reliably sanitized, and generate disposal cost and waste on every cycle.
