TL;DR: A hopper container is a bulk container with a sloped interior and a gated discharge that empties by gravity instead of by tipping. Selection comes down to three variables: discharge style (bottom, side or slide-gate), wall angle versus your material's angle of repose, and capacity against your batch size. Get the wall angle wrong and the hopper bridges instead of flowing, regardless of capacity.

    Quick Facts

    SpecDetail
Typical capacity45 to 96 cu ft (about 340 to 720 gallons)
Discharge stylesBottom, side, slide-gate, hinged door
Wall angleMust exceed the material's angle of repose
    MaterialRotomolded HDPE, one-piece, no welds
Forklift entryIntegrated base, two or four-way depending on model
    StackingStackable empty and loaded, model-dependent
Food contactFDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant resin available
Service lifeCommonly 10 to 15 years in industrial service

    Discharge Style Decides the Workflow

    StyleHow it emptiesBest for
Bottom dischargeGravity through a gated bottom openingFree-flowing dry solids into a machine, mixer or bag station
Side dischargeGate on the sidewallConveyor feeding, controlled metering
Slide gateManual or actuated plateBatch metering where flow must be stopped mid-discharge
Hinged doorFull openingSticky, chunky or wet product that will not gravity-feed

The failure pattern is predictable: a plant buys a bottom-discharge hopper for a material with high moisture or high fines content, the product bridges over the outlet, and operators end up rodding it out by hand — losing the entire labor saving the hopper was purchased for.

Wall Angle vs Angle of Repose

Every bulk material has an angle of repose, the steepest angle its own pile will hold. For gravity discharge to work reliably, the hopper wall angle must exceed it, with margin for moisture and compaction.

MaterialApproximate angle of reposeWall angle guidance
Dry sand, gravel30 to 35 degreesStandard slope generally sufficient
Grain, pellets, resin25 to 30 degreesStandard slope generally sufficient
Flour, powdered sugar35 to 45 degreesSteeper slope, consider vibration
Wet sand, damp aggregate40 to 45 degreesSteep slope plus wide outlet
Sticky food waste, sludge45+ degreesHinged door, not gravity gate

Two secondary rules matter as much as the angle:

  1. Outlet width should be at least four to five times the largest particle to avoid mechanical arching.
  2. Surface finish matters: smooth rotomolded HDPE has a lower coefficient of friction than corroded or welded steel, so it discharges materials that stall in an older steel hopper.
  3. Model Capacity and Footprint

Match batch size to capacity before comparing prices. Under-sizing forces double handling; over-sizing wastes floor space and freight.

HDPE vs Steel: The Maintenance Line Item

Purchase price favors used steel. Cost of ownership usually does not.

    FactorRotomolded HDPESteel
CorrosionNoneRequires paint or coating; rusts at wear points
Weld seamsNone — one pieceSeams crack under vibration and impact
WeightSubstantially lighter; lower forklift load and freightHeavy
RepairNot weldable; replace at end of lifeWeldable, but repairs recur
SanitationNon-porous, washable, food-grade resin availableWeld seams and pitting harbor residue
Product contaminationNo rust, no flaking coatingRust and coating flakes are foreign-body risks

In food, chemical and washdown environments the sanitation and contamination lines usually decide it outright. Our HDPE vs steel hopper comparison quantifies the maintenance delta.

    FAQ

    What is a hopper container?

A bulk container with sloped interior walls and a gated outlet that discharges by gravity rather than by tipping. It is used to feed machines, mixers, conveyors and bagging lines from bulk storage.

What is the difference between a hopper and a bulk container?

A bulk container is a straight-walled box that is emptied by tipping or unloading from the top. A hopper has sloped walls and a discharge gate so material flows out under gravity while the container stays on the floor or a stand.

What wall angle does a hopper need?

An angle greater than the material's angle of repose, with margin for moisture and compaction. Dry pellets flow at standard slopes; powders and damp aggregates need steeper walls and wider outlets.

Why does material bridge in a hopper?

Either the wall angle is too shallow for the material, or the outlet is too narrow relative to particle size. As a rule the outlet should be four to five times the largest particle dimension.

Are plastic hoppers better than steel?

In corrosive, washdown and food-contact service, yes — no rust, no weld seams, no flaking coating, and non-porous surfaces that clean faster. Steel remains preferable for very high temperature service and where field welding repair is required.

What size hopper do I need?

Size to one full batch plus a margin, converted from your material's bulk density. Standard families run roughly 45 to 96 cu ft; under-sizing forces double handling per shift.
